Undeserved Blessings

Romans 5:8 “…while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God…”

A young man stopped by our trade show booth to tell me yet another deer story. It went like this…on his first hunt ever, he walked into the predawn woods on his grandfather’s 30-acre farm, settled in next to a random big oak, dozed off, was stirred by the sound of crunching leaves, saw antlers and brown moving through the brush, leveled his shotgun and shot…a world-class buck!

Even before the lucky hunter was out of earshot, my buddy, a hard-hunting, experienced hunter, started railing. “That’s not right! I’ve hunted my butt off and never seen anything close to that. He doesn’t even know what he’s done. Ain’t fair! He does NOT deserve that buck!”
My frustrated buddy was right – it wasn’t fair; the young man didn’t deserve that incredible buck! But all I could think about was: I’m glad God doesn’t give me only what I deserve!

You see, the Bible says, “For the wages of sin is death…” and boy, have I sinned! But thank God I will not get what I deserve, for the rest of that verse says, “…but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Jesus paid for MY sins by His own death on the Cross. By grace I have been saved through faith, a totally underserved gift from God. I have done nothing to earn it; on the contrary, I’ve done lots NOT to deserve it! That’s why I celebrate the good fortune of others who receive a “gift” they clearly do NOT deserve. After all, I am the beneficiary of the greatest undeserved GIFT of all time bought by the highest price ever paid – the Precious Blood of Christ!
