Peace Transcends All Understanding

Philippians 4:7 – … and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Have you ever tried to describe hunting to a non-hunter? If you are an avid outdoorsperson, you've probably tried to convey that the experience of the hunt goes far beyond the shot and the trophy. I know my favorite part of the hunt is getting into the perfect blind, letting my mind quiet and waiting until all my senses are filled with what's around me.

My eyes are so acute that I notice the spider spinning his web, the tracks of the woods' inhabitants along the trails around me, and even the slightest movement in the brush announcing the possible incoming buck doesn't get by my notice. My ears can track the different calls of bird species back to their source; I can smell the dry sage as the wind picks up its scent; I can feel the warmth of the sinking sun on my neck; and I can still taste the fried cornbread from lunch. Explaining that kind of peace can be hard to convey and hard to understand … unless you've experienced it.

Yet, in Philippians, God promises us a peace that transcends all understanding, that surpasses even the peace of relinquishing the worries back to the world for a few hours in the woods. If you want to get close to God, get in the woods and give it all up until you can hear the rustle of the wind, the scurrying of a squirrel, or the light footfalls of an approaching deer. If you want to experience peace beyond what you can even imagine, seek God through Christ. When we give up the worries of the world to God, he promises an infinitely more amazing peace than even the outdoors can offer, a peace that will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
